MCA warns Chinese voters of opposition’s ‘cheap publicity’ tactics

MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has advised Chinese voters in the Pengerang parliamentary constituency not to be influenced by the tactics used by the Opposition ahead of the general election.

According to The Star Online, Dr Wee Ka Siong said the Chinese community should consider the developments taking place in the area as a result of the multi-billion ringgit Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex (PIPC) project that the government started years ago.

He said at that time the Opposition had deployed their leaders, lawyers and even supporters to gain support of the Pengerang people to go against the project.

“They were playing up on issues such as the relocation of cemeteries and temples to make way for the project,” said Dr Wee was quoted as saying by The Star Online.

He said this at the Pengerang parliamentary Chinese New Year open house at SJKC Taisin, Taman Bayu Damai here on Thursday.

Present was Pengerang MP and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

Dr Wee said Pengerang had shown good progress since he visited the area a year ago with so many developments taking place here.

He said the local communities had benefited from the project, which included a well-planned Taman Bayu Damai housing estate for residents who had to make way for the project.

“As Pengerang is progressing, now you don’t see the Opposition. They only came years ago to gain political mileage and get cheap publicity,” he said.

The project, the largest petrochemical complex in the country, is located on a 8,093ha site southeast of Pengerang in the Kota Tinggi district.

It will house oil refineries, a naptha cracker, petrochemical plants, as well as a liquefied natural gas import terminal and regasification plant.

Pengerang Deepwater Petroleum Terminal (PDPT) and Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) are the two main catalysts that would spearhead the development of PIPC.-10/2/2017
