Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem dies

Sarawak Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Adenan Satem passed away this afternoon from heart complications, just two weeks shy of his 73rd birthday.

Adenan, who led the Barisan Nasional (BN) to a resounding victory during the last Sarawak election, died at the Sarawak General Hospital Heart Centre in Samarahan around 1.20pm.

He leaves wife Jamilah Anu and five children.

Adenan replaced long-serving chief minister Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud on March 1, 2014.

Fondly known as Tok Nan, the popular politician was largely credited for BN’s landslide victory at the state polls in May last year.

According to his office, Adenan loved golfing, reading and singing, a talent he put to good use during the election campaign.

Adenan received his primary education at St Joseph’s Primary school and later at the St Joseph’s Secondary school.

He joined the now-defunct Sarawak Tribune as a journalist, before becoming a school teacher.

He then read law at the University of Adelaide, Australia, and in 1970, Adenan was appointed as a magistrate in Kuching.

Adenan’s political career began in 1976 when he was appointed as legal adviser and committee member of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB).

He went on to hold a number of state portfolios, including for land development, social development, as well as agriculture and food industries.

In 1979, he won the Muara Tuang by-election.

After winning the parliamentary seat of Batang Sadong in the 2004 general election, he was appointed as the federal minister of natural resources and environment, a position he gave up two years later to contest in the Tanjong Datu state seat in 2006.

In 2010, he became Taib’s special adviser, later succeeding him as the fifth chief minister.-12/1/2017
