ECRL: Shahrir wants environment impact study on Titiwangsa Range

Tan Sri Shahrir Samad (Johor Bahru – BN) wants the Transport Ministry to look into the environment impact of the proposed East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project that will cut across the Titiwangsa Range.

“The Titiwangsa Range is a water catchment area. What is the environment impact of the project going through the range?

“As a government, one can’t take action in a silo.”

Shahrir who is also BN Backbenchers Club chairman urged the ministry to look for alternative routes.

“Alternative routes should be looked. Gombak is already congested. Why not the train track begin from Port Klang head to Kuala Kelawang instead?”

He also raised concerns over the 50km tunnel which is part of the ECRL project.

”Where would you place the soil dug from the tunnel? There would also be a total of 180km of bridges.

”There will be impact,” he added

Dr D Michael Jeyakumar ( Sg Siput-PSM) meanwhile questioned how long would Malaysia take to pay back the loan that it took to build the ECRL.

“If KTMB takes 20 years to break even how long would it take to pay back the loan from China?”

The ECRL would be built by China Communications Construction Company costing RM55 billion from Port Klang in Selangor to Tumpat in Kelantan.-16/11/2016
