'Don Tiger' gang members killed in shootout with police

Police killed four members of a gang known as "Don Tiger" responsible for several robberies and house break-in cases in a shootout at Jalan Besar, Tambun here on Thursday.

Police are still looking for the remaining members of the group which committed crimes including armed robberies in Ipoh and Kampar since 2015.

Perak Deputy Police chief Datuk Hasnan Hassan said: "A police patrol car on crime rounds spotted a car with four occupants behaving suspiciously along Jalan Besar in Tanjung Rambutan at 10.50pm.

"As the personnel approached the car, a shot was fired by one of the men and the vehicle sped off," he told reporters here today.

The patrol car pursued the suspects' vehicle for a few metres before they crashed into another police car which blocked the road at Tambun.

The impact caused the suspects' car to skid and knock into a street lamp post.

Hasnan said when the police team tried to surround the vehicle, a shot was fired from the passenger seat.

"The personnel had no choice but to return fire and kill the four men aged between 20 and 30," he added.

Two of the men with previous criminal records had been identified while another two are wanted for luxury car robberies.

The leader of the gang was also shot dead in the incident.

"We are gathering information on them," Hasnan added.

Initial investigation revealed the victims suffered losses of up to RM976,000 in seven cases.

The gang was also involved in an attempted murder of a traffic policeman in December 2015.

Police seized the car which was robbed from a money changer in Kampung Rapat on Aug 27 this year.

Other items recovered were a Remington Colt .45 pistol, four live bullets, a shell, a slug, an air pistol, two parangs, a cutter, an iron rod, a set of vehicle registration number plates, two handphones, a plastic bag containing syabu, drug sniffing utensils and a bunch of keys.-23/9/2016
