DBKL officers, cycling group clash in city

The weekly car-free Sunday programme in Kuala Lumpur yesterday was marred by a clash between City Hall (DBKL) enforcement officers and a group of protesters comprising cycling enthusiasts, The Star reported.

The protesters claimed to have been intimidated and heckled by the DBKL men, with one protester allegedly getting slapped by one of the enforcement officers.

However, the DBKL men have countered the allegations by saying that they were assaulted by the protesters, instead.

The two sides clashed during a demonstration against the impounding of bicycles in KL, according to the daily.

Writing on Facebook, one of the protesters, Mar Ibrahim said that DBKL officers in plainclothes had ordered the group of about 40 cyclists to remove their banners. A scuffle broke out when the protesters refused.

“A protester was handcuffed and slapped while being taken to the Dang Wangi police station,”, she said.

She also claimed that at least five others sustained bruises and requests for the DBKL officers’ identification were ignored.

On the part of DBKL, an enforcement officer said he was punched by one of the cyclists at the protest.

Later, Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Sukri Kaman confirmed that a 23-year-old man was arrested after he refused to take down a banner.

“A DBKL enforcement officer also filed a report claiming he was punched when he and his colleagues tried to take down the banner.

“The suspect would be remanded and investigated under Section 353 of the Penal Code for using criminal force to hinder a public servant from discharging his duty,” Sukri was quoted as saying by The Star.

Meanwhile, KL Mayor Mohd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz said allegations of heavy-handedness on the part of DBKL officers were common.

“The police will decide who is in the wrong. So, just wait and see what is the actual scenario,” he said in a text message to The Star.-20/2/2017
