Abang Johari continues Adenan’s English policy

In line with his pledge to continue with Adenan Satem’s policies, Sarawak’s new Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg said English will remain the state’s second official language.

“Our education system is still open. In Sarawak, our English is still good. That’s why the late Tok Nan (Adenan) had mentioned that English, apart from Bahasa Malaysia, is also the official language in Sarawak. I also pursue that policy,” The Borneo Post quoted him as saying.

Noting that conferences across the globe were mostly conducted in English, Abang Johari said: “I must say Sarawakians attending conferences are confident in the English language.”

However, he urged the people to use proper English and not the version usually used in sending messages on social media.

At the dinner, Abang Johari pledged RM500,000 for the rebuilding of SMK St Teresa, bringing the total grant for the project from the state government to RM1.5 million, according to The Borneo Post.

The former chief minister, the late Adenan, had granted RM1 million after fire destroyed part of the school last Oct 29.
Urging former students of the school to raise money, Abang Johari pledged an additional allocation to match the amount to be raised by the Old Teresian Association, the report said.

Abang Johari’s wife Jumaani Tuanku Bujang, who is now president of the Association of Wives of Ministers and Assistant Ministers of Sarawak, pledged RM50,000 for the project.

Abang Johari said mission schools such as SMK St Teresa had produced many capable individuals who had played a role in building society.

Meanwhile, SMK St Teresa principal Mary John revealed that electrical short-circuit was the cause of the fire, which ruined 95 per cent of the school hall as well as some surrounding facilities.

The Borneo Post reported her as saying the school needed RM8.2 million for the rebuilding project and that several fund-raising activities had been lined up over the next couple of months.-24/1/2017
