Huawei opens regional HQ in Kuala Lumpur

China’s Huawei Technologies on Wednesday opened its regional headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

It has been designed as an ICT hub and centre of excellence to drive the industry’s open ecosystem and accelerate digital economy transformation in Malaysia.

Huawei has been appointed adviser to the Malaysian Government’s plan to train professionals in information and communication technology in local colleges, according to a report in the Nikkei Asian Review (NAR).

Huawei says it will train 300 students yearly at the regional centre located at Integra Tower, The Intermark.

In opening the regional centre, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the country needed to tap the expertise of global companies in the digital economy to realise Malaysia’s goal of achieving a high-income nation by 2020.

He added: “It is estimated that a 20 per cent increase in ICT investment will result in 1 per cent of gross domestic product growth of a country. For Malaysia, the figure is even higher at around 1.4 per cent.”

Abraham Liu, Huawei Malaysia CEO said: “As we are working towards making Malaysia’s aspirations of becoming an ICT regional hub a reality, we need to continue moving forward with digital transformation, and explore new innovative ideas for local enterprises, industries and operators.”

The RM15 million Customer Solution Integration and Innovation Experience Centre will aggregate over 120 reference applications and services across the world.

It will also implement plans to establish cloud storage and big data labs in the next three years, added the NAR report.

Malaysia is setting up a digital free trade zone to lure foreign investment into ICT by dishing out incentives and working visas.

Guangdong-based Huawei, which has been in Malaysia for 15 years, provides both hardware and software services, NAR reported.-27/10/2016
