Bad news for judiciary if Dr M is back as PM - MCA

MCA warned that the return of Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the prime minister if Pakatan Harapan wins the next general election is bad news for the judiciary.

“Dr Mahathir’s legacy lingers as the individual who single-handedly dismantled the independence of the judiciary.

“This will forever be etched in the ruminations of the legal practitioners,” said MCA religious harmony bureau secretary Chris Daniel Wong in a statement.

He added that Mahathir until today denies responsibility for the sacking of Lord President Salleh Abas and the expulsion of top senior judges.

He instead blamed the Agong at that time, the late Sultan Iskandar Sultan Ismail of Johor, who cannot defend himself today, added Wong

“His recalcitrance shows that he has no remorse over the wrongs he committed and have no qualms repeating the same.”

The MCA man also said there remained mutterings even to today about the fixing-up of key appointments to the federal court by cronies or those in the inner circle of Mahathir.

He then pointed out to the royal commission of inquiry in 2008 on the alleged judicial fixing by lawyer VK Lingam where the person recorded on a recording device had bragged he could obtain key judicial appointments with Mahathir’s help.

Wong also said that Mahathir would be remembered for his convenient amnesia when he testified at the inquiry, saying “I cannot remember” a total of 14 times, a fact which was bemoaned by DAP leader Lim Kit Siang in his blog then.

He said Lim had then mocked Mahathir for being so forgetful while testifying in the inquiry, adding that it was shocking that DAP and Kit Siang had no qualms now in teaming up with Mahathir.

“People should be alarmed that Mahathir allegedly had a hand, or played a role, in fixing up judicial appointments.

“They should be more alarmed that DAP is now urging the public to return Mahathir to power again by making him their choice as the prime minister when in the past they had been adamant and insistent on his immediate removal as the prime minister of 22 years by saying that it was way too long and an overstaying.”-30/1/2018
